Ministry in the Post-Christian Era
October 12-15, 2009
Ed White, Senior Consultant, The Alban Institute

The purpose of this seminar will be to explore how mainline Protestant congregations can thrive in a post-modern, post-Christian, perhaps "post denominational" era, and hopefully increasingly post-imperial society in the twenty-first century. Seminar participants will explore such questions as:

  • How can we overcome the hyper-individualism of American culture that undermines our efforts to be the Body of Christ?
  • What is the prophetic role of the Body of Christ in this environment?
  • How can we equip our people to "journey together through the wilderness?"
  • What kind of transformation are we seeking in our congregational life together?
  • How can we actually practice our faith beyond attending church on Sunday morning?
  • How do we guide people who are seeking a transformational faith experience?
  • How can the Internet help us to build community?
  • How do we become a less clergy dependent church?
  • What part does imagination play in the journey of faith?
  • What do we perceive to be the marks of a maturing disciple?

Vital Signs for Small Churches
November 9-11, 2009
Phil Tom, Associate, Small Church and Community Ministry Office, Presbyterian Church (USA)

The majority of churches in mainline denominations are smaller membership congregations. These churches can have a vital ministry for the Reign of God and there are a variety of models that can move congregations from a survival mentality to a Kingdom mentality. This seminar will explore the variety of mission and leadership models for smaller membership churches. Participants who are serving smaller membership churches will have the opportunity to reflect and discern possible next steps in helping their congregations to move toward spiritual renewal and vitality.

This event is partially funded by and is offered in partnership with the PC(USA) Small Church and Community Ministry Office.  There are fifteen $100 scholarships available for this event for pastors in the PC(USA).  When you register please indicate that you are interested in the scholarship as they will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

Social Teachings in Black Sacred Rhetoric
April 19 – 21, 2010
Katie G. Cannon, Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics, Union-PSCE

A principle concern of this workshop is to examine the ethics of living with integrity in situations of oppression. We will employ a rhetorical method created by Dr. Isaac R. Clark that introduces inventive ways to bring new answers to perennial moral dilemmas. By debunking, unmasking, and disentangling contestable issues, we will sharpen our skills of argumentation so as to become conversant with creative ways that African American Christians as doers of justice react to the existing social order and/or act upon it.

Sharing the Gospel in a Technological Age
April 26 - 28, 2010
Stan Hargraves, Director of Program Development, The Center for Ministry and Leadership Development, Union-PSCE

During the past century technology has transitioned rapidly from one form of communication to another. New modes of communication represent new ways of sharing the gospel. As technology has advanced the world has shrunk by means of rapid communication and travel. As a result the ways we communicate and relate with one another have changed. What challenges does this technological age bring to the proclamation of the gospel? What can the traditions of the church teach us about effectively using new communication tools? How can the gospel be communicated most effectively in this technological age? What tools are available that can communicate the gospel? You are invited to come and explore the possibilities, and to take with you fresh insights into the variety of tools God has provided with which to proclaim the gospel.
