Vital Signs for Small Churches The majority of churches in mainline denominations are smaller membership congregations. These churches can have a vital ministry for the Reign of God and there are a variety of models that can move congregations from a survival mentality to a Kingdom mentality. This seminar will explore the variety of mission and leadership models for smaller membership churches. Participants who are serving smaller membership churches will have the opportunity to reflect and discern possible next steps in helping their congregations to move toward spiritual renewal and vitality. This event is partially funded by and is offered in partnership with the PC(USA) Small Church and Community Ministry Office. Shaping the Sacred Space: Women as Pastors and Preachers In this seminar, we will reflect on the historical and contemporary experiences of women in ministry. We will focus on the contributions of women to the pastoral and preaching dimensions of ministry and address the unique challenges of serving as female pastors. Each participant will have an opportunity to reflect on her own pastoral experience by means of a case study that illustrates a challenge she has faced as a woman in ministry. In addition, participants will share stories of how their gender has shaped the sacred space in which they serve. CEUs: 1.1
Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Recent research shows that “emotional intelligence” or “EQ” is a much better predictor of success at work, particularly in leadership, than traditional “IQ” is. In this interactive session, participants will explore the key EQ skills shown to be related to exemplary leadership including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management. The focus will be on assessment of one’s own skills and applications to their role in the church. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the six different styles of leadership and to consider which of these will be most effective in their work situations. Registration: $100
Executive Leadership Assessment Seminar This seminar will include perspectives on (a) the changing nature of the church and its implications for governing body leaders; (b) the regular work of executive leaders in relation to staff colleagues, presbytery committees and leaders, congregations, and pastors; and (c) the role of executive leaders in the “larger” church, in light of changes within denominational structures and functions. Through the use of case studies, simulations, peer input, feedback from active presbytery leaders, and testing instruments, participants will receive clear and direct feedback on their gifts and areas for growth. Registration deadline: March 5, 2010 Registration: $200 Deposit: $75
Social Teachings in Black Sacred Rhetoric A principle concern of this workshop is to examine the ethics of living with integrity in situations of oppression. We will employ a rhetorical method created by Dr. Isaac R. Clark that introduces inventive ways to bring new answers to perennial moral dilemmas. By debunking, unmasking, and disentangling contestable issues, we will sharpen our skills of argumentation so as to become conversant with creative ways that African American Christians as doers of justice react to the existing social order and/or act upon it. Registration: $150
Sharing the Gospel in a Technological Age During the past century technology has transitioned rapidly from one form of communication to another. New modes of communication represent new ways of sharing the gospel. As technology has advanced the world has shrunk by means of rapid communication and travel. As a result the ways we communicate and relate with one another have changed. What challenges does this technological age bring to the proclamation of the gospel? What can the traditions of the church teach us about effectively using new communication tools? How can the gospel be communicated most effectively in this technological age? What tools are available that can communicate the gospel? You are invited to come and explore the possibilities, and to take with you fresh insights into the variety of tools God has provided with which to proclaim the gospel. Registration: $150
Exploring the Sacraments/Embodying Christian Faith How do Baptism and the Lord's Supper shape our faith and lives?
