From Urgency to Action: Effective Ministry with Children
March 15, 2010, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Liz Perraud, National Coordinator of the Regional Network, The LOGOS Ministry
Liz is on the staff of The LOGOS Ministry, an organization that partners with churches, judicatories and seminaries to help build young disciples.  She is their National Coordinator of the Regional Network and also writes training materials, leads workshops and films training webcasts.

There is a confluence of voices—both secular and sacred—about one of the most important challenges facing our society today: the moral and spiritual development of our children.  The questions for the church are….What are we doing about it?...and…How well are we doing it?

We'll hear what many organizations are saying about this challenge and take an in-depth look at a practical tool called The Children's Ministry Effectiveness Model. The model is built around three primary dimensions that are at the heart of a comprehensive view of ministry.

PURPOSEFUL: Is the congregation intentional about why a children’s ministry is vital for the church?

PRACTICAL: Does the congregation have an effective plan and approach for implementing and sustaining the children's ministry?

IMPACTFUL: Is the effect of the children’s ministry truly reflective of ministry and not merely another program in the church?

We'll examine all three components through specific characteristics or factors.

Clark that introduces inventive ways to bring new answers to perennial moral dilemmas. By debunking, unmasking, and disentangling contestable issues, we will sharpen our skills of argumentation so as to become conversant with creative ways that African American Christians as doers of justice react to the existing social order and/or act upon it.

What challenges does this technological age bring to the proclamation of the gospel? What can the traditions of the church teach us about effectively using new communication tools? How can the gospel be communicated most effectively in this technological age? What tools are available that can communicate the gospel? You are invited to come and explore the possibilities, and to take with you fresh insights into the variety of tools God has provided with which to proclaim the gospel.

Whether you are in ministry in rural or urban settings, small or large churches, there will be times when people in your congregation will experience crisis. It may be economic or emotional in nature, but whatever the crisis is, it is dependent upon the pastor and the church to respond in healthy ways. It is easy to be either too involved or not involved enough, so how can Christians respond in ways that are helpful and healing? Preaching Challenging New Testament Texts
February 28 - March 2, 2011
John Carroll, Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New Testament and Dean of Union-PSCE at Richmond
Beverly Zink-Sawyer, Samuel W. Newell, Jr. Professor of Preaching and Worship, Union-PSCE

The New Testament presents many formidable challenges for both interpretation and proclamation in the 21st century. Some texts elude comprehension by contemporary readers, while others are plain enough but provoke or disturb. How may preachers develop faithful interpretation of such challenging texts of scripture and also speak a relevant, credible, and pastoral word to congregations today? The leaders of this seminar, a specialist in homiletics and a New Testament interpreter, will provide ideas and resources for preaching an array of difficult New Testament texts and facilitate a conversation in which participants share insights and strategies they have found to be fruitful.

Texts to be chosen for conversation pose challenges such as the following:

  1. Hard Sayings of Jesus:
    • The Scandal of Radical Grace
    • The Cost of Radical Discipleship
    • The Prohibition of Divorce
  2. Texts of Judgment
  3. Fallen from Grace? Tough Talk from Paul and Hebrews
  4. Failed Promise?: When the End Never Comes
  5. Texts of Terror in Revelation
  6. Preaching Anti-Jewish Texts
  7. Hierarchical Households in the Realm of God?
  8. Silencing Women in Church?
  9. Disorienting Talk about Sexual Orientation
  10. Promoting Suffering?
  11. Preachers Requests: Some of the challenging texts will be selected from requests submitted by participants when they register. Please see the input box on the registration form, or if you have already registered and have another suggestion please email us.

Retreat Ministry in a Place Apart
May 9 - 13, 2011
Joel Winchip, Executive Director, Presbyterian Church Camp and Conference Association

For centuries the church has used retreats to allow people to encounter God and Christian community in a place apart from home and church. The need for restoration and renewal is even more important in our fast-paced world as we seek to address the spiritual needs of people who do not know how to slow down. Retreats bring us together as small groups or as an intergenerational community of faith. Away from the demands and distractions of our outside lives, these experiences can take us to thin places where we feel closer to God's presence. This seminar will address the Biblical foundations and educational goals of retreat ministry, along with the practicality of planning a retreat.

Please note: This seminar will meet for 5 days, 3 hours each day. This will leave free time for participants to work in the library, enjoy time for refreshment and renewal.

Registration: $150
