Union-PSCE Welcomes New Member of Theology Faculty
Dr. Thomas A. James (Ph.D.’04) has accepted a call to join the department of theology and ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education to teach theology for a three-year term.
An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Dr. James has served as co-pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Glendale, OH, since 2005. He also served as interim pastor at Corinth Presbyterian Church in Dayton, OH, from 2004-2005. He will be a commissioner to the 2008 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), meeting in San Jose in June.
James's interests include contemporary interpretations of the doctrine of God, theological anthropology, and the interactions between theology and other ways of understanding the world. He is revising his dissertation,
In Face of Reality: The Constructive Theology of Gordon D. Kaufman, for publication, and is working on two other books, one a study of
Reinhold Niebuhr as Theologian of Politics and Culture and Creative Responsibility: Toward a Theology of Human Becoming.
“Union-PSCE is fortunate to welcome Dr. James to its faculty for the next three years, for he brings rich experience in congregational leadership, deep insight into the theological traditions of the church, and keen awareness of the ways the church must engage the contemporary world, culture, and scientific research if its message is to have cogency in our time,” said John Carroll, Dean of Union-PSCE in Richmond.
James holds a Ph.D. degree from Union-PSCE, a master of divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the bachelor-of-arts degree from Toccoa Falls College. He has served as visiting instructor at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and the University of Richmond.
James will join Union-PSCE in August. The faculty includes 30 full-time members who teach in the seminary's degree programs in Richmond, VA, and Charlotte, NC.
He is married to the Rev. Michelle James who serves as co-pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Glendale. She has served churches in Cincinnati, OH, Greenville, NC, and Chester, VA.
