Tribute to Sara P. LittleĀ Sara P. Little, a pioneer in the field of Christian education, passed away on March 5, five days short of her 90th birthday. Little was a graduate of Queens College (A.B., 1939), the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (M.R.E., 1944), and Yale University (Ph.D., 1958). She was professor of Christian Education at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education from 1951-1976 and held a joint appointment at Union Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education from 1973-1989. She was the Robert and Lucy Reynolds Critz professor of Christian Education at Union Theological Seminary from 1980 until her retirement in 1989. Her major works The Role of the Bible in Contemporary Christian Education (1961) and To Set One’s Heart (1983) continue to instruct and inspire professionals and practitioners in field of Christian Education. Dr. Little is remembered by colleagues and former students at Union-PSCE as a scholar, teacher, mentor, and friend. She helped students see what a vital teaching ministry can mean in the church and was a model of deep interdisciplinary scholarship. Throughout her distinguished career, she embodied the power of grace, hospitality and collegiality in her relationships with others in her field, and across theological disciplines. Her legacy was not confined to the institutional setting. Throughout her career she offered her gifts and enthusiasm for teaching to students in the church and local community. From the classroom to the living room, wherever people were gathered together to learn, she was willing and eager to teach. |
