HISTORY AND BACKGROUND ON THE HOWIE CENTER
The Carl Howie Center for Science, Art, and Theology was formed in 1995 to promote dialogue and discussion among scientists, artists, and theologians and those who have an interest in these disciplines. Based at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education, the Center is named in honor of Dr. Carl G. Howie, an alumnus of Union-PSCE and a retired pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Dr. Howie’s abiding interest in science and theology led him to serve as a member of several regional and denominational groups on medical and bioethics.
The Center offers an annual conference that brings individuals together around a common theme. The conferences provide opportunities for clergy, professionals, scholars, and members of the public to participate in substantive discussions at the intersection of science, art, and theology. |
